Tanker withdrawn from Baltops manoever after accident injured four

The "Rhön" had to abort its participation in the Baltops manoever after the boat accident on June 17. The ship will return to its home base Wilhelmshaven zafter the loss of a rescue boat and the significant damage to its cranes at starboard side. The investigations into the accident were intense. On the whole four crew members of the tanker were injured, three of them serious. One of them was still in intensive care with life threatening injuries. All four were inside the boat which crashed down from the boat deck. All had to be rescued by the fire brigade with fractures, head injuries a.o. The crashed boat was recovered and part of the investigation now. The affected boat davit was temporarily fixed after the accident which happened ahead of planned repair work to the RAS oil supply system a damage of which had forced the ship to withdraw from the manoever and head to Kiel for repairs. Before the work started, an oil boom was to be laid out around the tanker, pulled by the boat which crashed when being launched. Dinghy fell into the water - one crew member injured

In the Scheer Port at the Naval Base in Kiel a dinghy of the "Rhön" fell nto the water from the "Rhön". The fire brigade was alerted at 3.30 p.m. by the crew of the tanker. Several crew members had plunged into the water. One man was injured and had to be taken to hospital. The dinghy was recovered and was to be investigated. The tanker which was participating in the manoever Baltops was released on June 16 due to a damage which needed to be repaired.

Delayed return due to engine damage

The "Rhön" with its crew of 42 returned to its homeport Wilhelmhaven 10 hours late on Mar 16, 2012. The tanker had suffered an engine damage which caused the delay. The ship had been operating in the „Standing NATO Maritime Group 1“ (SNMG1) with ships from the Netherlands, Canada and Germany. It had sailed from Tarent aus to Catania, Sicily, Naples and Souda. before sailing home on Mar 5.
