Ship broke up in storms

The storms of the recent days have caused heavy damage to the wreckage of the 'Natalia', which had run aground in Şile and was abandoned. The power of the waves in the past few days left only the bow, the stern and parts of the starboard side above water. The superstructure was partially demolished and huge parts torn off. The aft was covered with debris. The hull broke into three sections, and the port side with the deck cranes has collapsed. Oil leaked from storage tanks

On Sep 22 oil leaked from the deep fuel storage tanks of the "Natalia" at its grounding position off Sile. Pollution prevention technical teams went aboard the vessel and attended the scene at the shore. Further operations were handled by appointed teams onboard, sea surface, and shore under the supervision of environmental prevention officers.

Salvage operation suspended

On Aug 14 it was reported that the "Natalia" was finally abandoned to its fate after salvage attempts were unsuccessful. The vessel had experienced water ingress and leaks in the cargo compartments and double bottom ballast tanks. The salvage operations were therefore suspended eight months after the grounding. The vessel was largely under water and the decks a scrap heap.
