Fear of oil spill from wrecked trawler

Danish authorities were pressing the owners of the "Narluneq", which had run aground a rock and tilted near Qaqortoq in southern Greenland on Sep 14, to remove the vessel which still contained 30,000 litres of diesel, 6,000 litres of hydraulic oil and 300 liters of engine oil. The Danish Ministry of Environment now urged the Iluliaq Seafood, a company owned by Spanish investors and businessman Kim Høegh-Dam, to present a plan for how to salvage the vessel and liquidate the risk of an oil spill. The ship was losing about five liters diesel per day. The ship has already leaked a limited amount of diesel and the authorities worried about further spills. The ship with a crew of six aboard had grounded on a rock near Qaqortoq on Sep 14 around 5 p.m., tilted and capsized short time later. Only the port side remained above water. The crew saved themselves onto an island. The Qaqortoq Police and the local fire department had attended on Sep 16. The police could see that windows on the ship were open. People are urged to stay away from the ship and reminded that it was a criminal offense to remove effects from the ship. The case was then handed over to the Danish Maritime Authority. In August, the ship was struck by vandalism, when sugar was poured into both oil and diesel tanks via the studs on the deck. In addition, some electronic equipment inside the wheelhouse was subject to severe vandalism. A young man has been detained in the case. In July, several crew members were left behind in Tasiilaq. There was a disagreement between them and the captain, which led to them being abandoned and then having trouble getting home on their own.
