Vehicles carrier sank fishing vessel - search for missing crew member going on

Wed Sep 06 10:19:49 CEST 2017 Timsen

In the night to Aug 31, 2017, the "Mykines" was in collision with a Faroese f/v in the Skonunar Fjord between Streymoy, Hestoy and Sandoy upon the Faroe Islands. The vehicles carrier quickly turned around and started a search for the crew in the dark and troubled weather, unfortunately, only one of the two crew members was saved. The search involved many vessels that were asked to keep an eye out for any wreckage and residue from the fishing vessel which sank on approx. 70 meters of water depth. The powerful undercurrent in the waters may have shifted the wreck from the collision site. The local rescue service has used both the trawl, but also an underwater camera to findit, but without luck so far. In the morning of Sep 5 a search has begun with special cameras in the area in order to locate the wreck of the lost ship. It was believed that the second crew member was still caught inside the wreckage. The rescue service was also considering about sending divers into the depth for a last attempt to find the sunken cutter with the fisherman aboard. The "Mykines" sailed from Rotterdam on Sep 5 and was headed to Torshavn, ETA Sep 6.
