Design flaws contributed to yacht sinking

Wed Feb 27 10:31:10 CET 2013 Timsen

An investigation report has been published regarding the sinking of the "MY Yogi" on Feb 17, 2012, in the Aegean Sea. After both engines had failed and water had penetrated the hull, the crew was rescued by the Greek Coastguard with a helicopter. Now the French office for the investigation of accidents at sea has published its report on the sinking why the superyacht had failed. The investigative agency does not share the view of shipyard and ship owner that the vessel was blameless, and that the crew was to blame for the sinking. The report complains that structural changes had been made without noticing the licensing authority. The stability of the ship had not been sufficiently verified. That the crew noticed the flooding only when it was too late was caused by a defective alarm system, but also the lack of patrols . That the lifeboats were not accessible because of the strong list which jammed the side doors, was a serious design flaw. The experts found a long list of technical and human causes that could contributed to the loss. Weather and sea conditions certainly have not been the problem. As usual, the technical report doest not make conclusions regarding the legal situation. Courts will have to find out who has to pay for the damage. The ship had a value of 35 million francs. Report Due this Summer into Mysterious Sinking of M/Y Yogi

Sat Apr 14 09:06:20 CEST 2012 arnekiel

As gCaptain reports, Proteksan Turquoise issued the most recent public statement from any of the parties linked to its 60m superyacht, Yogi, on 12 March. The vessel itself sank off the coast of Skyros, Greece on 17 February, triggering much theorising on the possible cause of the sinking. Proteksan’s latest statement, which it has declared to be the final word on the matter unless there are further unseen developments, states that all the relevant ‘stakeholders’ have now had the opportunity to confer in the presence of their lawyers. Superyacht sank after mechanical failure

Fri Feb 17 21:11:40 CET 2012 Timsen

The "My Yogi" sank in the morning of Feb 17. 2012, 19 miles east of the coast Skyros in the Aegean Sea. The superyacht, which has only been up for charter since the summer of 2011, was reportedly in the area for minor warranty work when it suffered a mechanical failure in gale force winds, suffered water ingress began to list to starboard and eventually sank in deep water. The vessel had lost engine power before the sinking. The Hellenic Coast Guard was on scene with a Super Puma helicopter and was able to get the crew of eight off safely. Two Air Force helicopters and a Navy frigate, as well as coast guard vessels and four commercial ships had headed to the assistance of the yacht, after the captain sent out a distress signal.
