A Russian crew member of the "Sea Melody" died after trapping his leg in a rope and falling overboard at a North Lincolnshire port, an inquest found. Sergy Gaponov, 40, of Novgorod in Russia, was taken overboard while working on the vessel at Grove Port, at Gunness on the River Trent on Dec 18, 2013. Search for missing sailor continued

Fri Dec 20 13:06:01 CET 2013 Timsen

The search for a man who was lost overboard from a ship in the River Trent was continued on Dec 20. A Humberside Police helicopter was called at 10:24 a.m. to investigate a possible sighting of the crewman, reported to be a Russian national, but was unable to locate the man. It was thought the 45-year-old fell into the water as the ship docked at Grove Wharf on Dec 18. Initial attempts to locate the man were abandoned due to poor weather conditions. The search resumed Dec 19 morning, and two coastguard teams from Hull and Cleethorpes and Humber Rescue teams from Hessle were searching for the man. The MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) wa also investigating the incident.
