Medevac in the North Pacific
The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter "Rush" arrived in Kodiak on Dec 5, 2011, bringing an ailing mariner from the "Navios Ulysses" in the North Pacific Ocean to emergency medical care. The Coast Guard Command Center in Juneau received notice on Dec 2 at 4:30 a.m. that the vessel had a 52-year-old crewman onboard suffering from abdominal pain. The vessel was out of range of aircraft for a medevac. The "Rush" met the "Navios Ulysses" at 4:14 a.m. Sunday, 713 miles southwest of Kodiak and transferred the patient at sea by small boat. Weather conditions on scene were 30-knot winds and 12-foot seas. The "Rush" docked in Kodiak at 2 p.m. The patient was transported by a Kodiak City Fire Department ambulance crew to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center where he was reported in stable condition. The "Navios Ulysses" was continuing on its voyage to Portland, Oregon. Report with photos: http://www.d17.uscgnews.com/go/doc/780/1251883/
