Ferry rides cancelled due to mechanical issues

Thu Jul 21 12:59:23 CEST 2016 Timsen

Fast ferry rides to Nantucket were canceled on July 21, 2016, because of mechanical issues with the "Lady Martha" on July 20. Ferries from Hyannis to the island will leave at 8:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 2:20 p.m., and 5:40 p.m. Ferry times from Nantucket are: 9:55 a.m., 12:40 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. There were also issues with the high-speed ferry on July 18, and two trips were canceled.

Lady Martha surrounded by oil boom following water ingress

Wed Aug 14 23:07:01 CEST 2013 Timsen

All trips on the "Lady Martha" between Hyannis and Martha's Vineyard, and it's mid-day round-trip between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket on Aug 14 have been canceled. The ferry was returning to Hyannis after leaving Martha's Vineyard at 9:20 a.m. on Aug 13 when the captain noticed a problem with the propulsion system which allowed water to fill a compartment in the rear of the vessel, which generated a lot of smoke. The ferry was still able to make it to the dock on Ocean Street. A coupling shaft in the vessel was out of sync and a rubber gasket became heated because of friction, causing a lot of smoke. A small watertight compartment that houses the shaft in the rear of the ferry filled with water but the area was separated from the rest of the vessel by a solid bulkhead,. Additional pumps were needed to empty the water from the compartment so that workers could refasten the coupling. The compartment has very little oil inside it but a boom was deployed around the ferry for a small sheen on the water's surface. 13 passengers evacuated after water ingress

Wed Aug 14 11:27:08 CEST 2013 Timsen

The "Lady Martha" began taking on water on Aug 13, 2013, in Hyannis Harbor as a seal gave way. The fast ferry Lady Maratha was returning to Hyannis when the captain noticed that a water tight compartment in the rear of the ferry filled with water. By noon, all 13 passengers were safely evacuated from the vessel. Barnstable police officers and Hyannis firefighters with a Hyannis fire rescue boat responded to the scene. The U.S. Coast Guard inspected the ferry before it was allowed to return to service. The Inter-island ferry service was canceled through the whole day.
