Lady Martha surrounded by oil boom following water ingress
All trips on the "Lady Martha" between Hyannis and Martha's Vineyard, and it's mid-day round-trip between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket on Aug 14 have been canceled. The ferry was returning to Hyannis after leaving Martha's Vineyard at 9:20 a.m. on Aug 13 when the captain noticed a problem with the propulsion system which allowed water to fill a compartment in the rear of the vessel, which generated a lot of smoke. The ferry was still able to make it to the dock on Ocean Street. A coupling shaft in the vessel was out of sync and a rubber gasket became heated because of friction, causing a lot of smoke. A small watertight compartment that houses the shaft in the rear of the ferry filled with water but the area was separated from the rest of the vessel by a solid bulkhead,. Additional pumps were needed to empty the water from the compartment so that workers could refasten the coupling. The compartment has very little oil inside it but a boom was deployed around the ferry for a small sheen on the water's surface.
