MV JIANMAO 9 7518915

Tue Nov 30 09:35:40 CET 2010 Timsen

Three provinces in central Vietnam – Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai – have prepared equipment and personnel to cope with an oil spill after the "Jianmao 9" sinking. The vessel foundered near Vietnam’s Ly Son Island, 72 nautical miles from Quang Nam’s Ly Son Island on November 9 on the way from Malaysia to China. It carried 80 tons of FO, 20 tons of DO and 200 liters of LO oil. Local agencies have kept an eye on the ship and prepared equipment and personnel to deal with a possible oil spill. Quang Nam and Da Nang have been also prepared for this. Methods to remedy an oil spill include chemical, biological and mechanical measures.

The Border Guard Command of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province and other concerned provincial agencies handed over a group of Chinese sailors to the Chinese Consulate in HCM City on Nov 12. Officials in the province completed all necessary procedures in just one day to help all 26 sailors from the "Jianmao 9" return home after their ship sank off the coast of the central city of Da Nang while it was en route from Malaysia to China with a cargo of steel. The Panama-flagged cargo vessel "NYK Aguarius", which was sailing from China to Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, received the SOS distress call and arrived in time to save the entire crew. The vessel handed the crew over to the province's border guard force.
