Grounding on Siassi Island
The 'Ialibu' ran aground at Kampalap beach on Siassi island in the Morobe Province with 140 passengers and 13 crew members on board on March 7, 2022. The Pacific Towing was tasked to survey the hull. The NMSA launched investtigaations. The Pactow tug was tasked to refloat the ship and tow it to Madang. The starboardd side engine room was breached and flooded in the initial bottom touch. The ship listed to starboard side. The master had dropped the stern anchor, but strong northeast winds and high swell pushed the ship onto the shore. The passengers were dropped off on Siassi island. The 'Momase' took them to Kimbe and Rabaul. The hole in the hull was meanwhile patched and the water drained.
