ITF secured collective agreement for crew of MV Gurasis
The International Transport Workers Federation has secured a new collective agreement for the crew of a ship that spent the weekend docked in Newcastle. Union officials had concerns about the welfare of the Filipino and Indian crew members onboard the " flag of convenience " ship MV Gurasis. The Federation's National Co-ordinator Dean Summers says a new pay deal was negotiated on Saturday. "After six hours of negotiations on board we were able to secure a collective agreement for the 24 crew on board," he said. "We were able to go through all the issues and there were a range of issues surrounding safety and conditions on board and this collective agreement will ensure the safety, the dignity and the standards for those seafarers for the next 12 months." The ship is owned by Indian company Bhatia International and Mr Summers says it could lead to changes on other vessels.
