Ferry ablaze off Cebu
On July 23, 2020 at 10.45 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the 'Filipinas Dinagat' in Visayan waters between Carmen and Sogod, north of Ceby City. The ferry was en route from Ceby City, where she had sailed at 7 p.m. to Palompon, Leyte. Within a short time she was engulfed in flames, The captain ordered all on board to abandon ship. All 45 people on board, four crew and 41 passengers, were rescued by the Philippine Coastguard and taken to Danao Port for medical assistance. The blazing ferry was anchored in the sea 5.5 nautical miles east off Binongkalan Point in the morning of July 24. The captain, Joel Villanueva, and three ship crew C/M Bonifacio Despi, 2/E Marclein Estrobo, and Winifredo Ceballos, remained in the vicinity waters aboard a PCG rescue vessel to assist the further response. The fire was tackled within 12 hours, but the not finally put out.
