Engine damage caused allision

Mon May 15 10:09:35 CEST 2023 Timsen

The initial results of the investigation into the allision of the 'Mutiara Pertiwi I' on May 10 in Ternate have revealed that the ferry had experienced an engine failure, which caused a loss of steering. Local authorities have interviewed ten witnesses, including the skipper, crew, and shipping operator. The vessel remained under the supervision of the Water and Air Police Corps. One of the two ferry docks, which was badly damaged, was temporarily closed.

Ferry operations stopped after accident

Fri May 12 10:39:01 CEST 2023 Timsen

After the 'Mutiara Pertiwi I' lost control while approaching the dock in Ternate on May 10, officials have ordered the City Line ferry to temporarily suspend operations while the investigation was underway. The vessel had operated between Bastion and neighbouring Tidore Island and was approaching the port to dock at Pier 2, but veered off course and did not slow down. It sideswiped Pier 1, knocking down the landing bridge, which fell into the water, and broke concrete and damaged a dolphin on the pier. The vessel continued forward, causing damage to a second vessel before finally coming to a stop. The port operator closed Pier 1, while the investigation and repairs were ongoing. A team was on site to interrogate the captain and interview passengers in the port. Weather conditions did not seem to have been a factor, although there was a strong current in the area.

Ferry allided with roro ramp

Wed May 10 21:11:13 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Mutiara Pertimi 1' allided with the roro ramp at Ternate port, Western North Maluku, in the afternoon of May 10, 2023, while maneuvering towards the berth. The ramp along with one of the towers collapsed. Nobody was injured. The ferry was taken to anchorage. Strong current and the ferry’s very high speed were regarded as the main causes of the accident.
