Mungo refloated

Thu Aug 18 10:41:07 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Mungo" which ran aground in the entrance of Littlehampton Harbour on Aug 17, 2011, has been successfully refloated. The ship had run aground in the mouth of the River Arun at 3 p.m. and was refloated on Aug 18 just after 02:00 a.m. None of the crew on board were injured. Rescue teams had been waiting for the next high tide. Now the ship is anchored 1,5 miles south of Littlehampton, pending a survey and is expected to berth at Littlehampton this afternoon to unload the cargo. Four crew and two pilot staff were on board when the "Mungo" became stranded. A coastguard rescue team, Shoreham RNLI lifeboat and a tug were sent to the scene. Possibly the vessel may have suffered a possible failure of her steering. The incident left the harbour entrance blocked, but navigable with care. Cargo ship carrying 1,000 tons of granite runs aground on harbour wall

Thu Aug 18 06:27:16 CEST 2011 arnekiel

An emergency operation is under way to shift a ship that ran aground blocking the entrance to Littlehampton Harbour in West Sussex, Daily Mail reports. The cargo ship, Mungo, which was carrying 1,000 tons of granite, is thought to have drifted towards the shore after a mechanical malfunction. A spokeswoman for Solent Coastguard said: ‘A ship fully laden with gravel had some sort of failure and ran aground across the entrance to Littlehampton Harbour. ‘There are no reports of any injuries.’ It was feared the ship may break its back as the tide went out this evening and by 5pm it appeared to be leaking diesel.
