Wave of container ship damaged ferry and cars, injured passengers
A 10-foot wave gave passengers on the Fort Fisher/Southport ferry quite a scare in the evening of MAy 14, 2013. The wave was caused by the "Hanjin Pretoria" which passed by the ferry whilst coming from New York around 6:30 p.m.. The captain of the ferry turned into the wave so it would hit the bow, which is standard operating procedure. Some passengers suffered minor injuries and six vehicles had minor damage. The ferry made its way to Fort Fisher and everyone was able to drive off. The ferry had minor damage to the railing area and was operating normally after the incident.
