Fire in crew cabin
On April 27, 2019, at 11.30 a.m. a fire broke out aboard the "MSC Samantha" which was moored at the APM North Pier Container Terminal in the port of Gioia Tauro. Two teams of the fire brigade of Palmi and of the port of Gioia Tauro were mobilized to fight the flames in the crew's quarters and managed to put it out within ne hour. The fire started from one cabin, probably due to an electrical fault, and then spread to other rooms. According to preliminary findings, it appeared that the fire developed from an electrical panel. The affected cabin burnt out, and a corridor was damaged by the fire. The smoke had filled the entire deck, and the crew was evacuated. Emergency procedures have taken place in the terminal. One crew member was treated for smoke inhalation. After two hours the response was completed and the fire fighting teams were stood down.
