Largest container vessel ever calls on the Port of Savannah

Sat Feb 25 09:22:22 CET 2012 arnekiel

The MSC Roma, a post-Panamax-class container ship capable of carrying 9,200 TEUs — or 20-foot container equivalents — passed Savannah’s Historic Riverfront about 8:30 a.m. Friday on its way to the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal. Post-Panamax vessels are too large to transit the Panama Canal at its current depths. At 1,100 feet long and 150 feet wide, the Roma — the largest container vessel ever to call on the Port of Savannah — was brought upriver by Savannah River pilot Rick Wesley, accompanied by Moran Towing Corp.’s powerful tractor tugs, the Edward J. Moran and the James A. Moran. The docking pilot was Larry Missroon. http://savannahnow.com/news/2012-02-25/massive-container-ship-sails-savannah-port#.T0iaSFHnJ8E
