Grounding in the Kiel Canal

Mon Jan 14 08:59:43 CET 2019 Timsen

On Jan 14, 2019, at 12.45 a.m. the "Petkum", enroute from Helsinki to Bremerhaven, suffered an engine failure during the westbound transit in the dodge in Oldenbüttel. The ship got stuck in the embankment with its stern. The tug "Wulf 7" (IMO: 9183075) which was transiting the canal too in the same direction after having escorted the bulkcarrier "Angelic Glory" to Kiel, was tasked to assist and pulled the ship free. The canal was barred for ship traffic between Oldenbüttel and Breiholz during this time. After the "Petkum" was floating again, it was taken to Brunsbüttel and berthed at the Ostermoor Oil Terminal of the port at 7 a.m. for inspections. She left again at 11.50 p.m. and resumed the voyage to Bremerhaven, ETA Jan 15.
