Biggest ship ever to enter port of Antwerp through the Berendrecht Lock

Wed Dec 10 10:29:55 CET 2014 Timsen

The "MSC New York" was the biggest ship ever to enter the port of Antwerp through the Berendrecht lock on Dec 9, 2014. The ship came from Zeebrugge and arrived at 5:00 a.m. The container ship will stay in the Delwaide Dock until Dec 11 before proceeding to Rotterdam. 3,400 containers will be unloaded and 3,800 to 4,000 containers taken aboard during this time. The Berendrecht lock never received a ship of that size, before. The lock passage was carefully prepared by the Joint Nautical Authority, the MSC Shipping Company and the port during the recent weeks. The "MSC New York" is, however, not the largest ship ever in the port of Antwerp. In October 2013, the "Mary Maersk" was in port which can carry about 18,000 TEZ, about 2,000 more than the "MSC New York". Dutch report with photos: http://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20141209_01419679
