The "MSC Kalina" on Feb 25, 2011, came under attack of pirates in the Indian Ocean south of Salalah and north-east of the Yemeni island of Socotra. The boxship increased speed to 20 knots and took evasive manoeuvres before the pirates, how had launched from a nearby mothership, gave up the chase after 15 minutes. The pirates who approached the ship in a boat and opened RGP and assault rifles fire. The mixed crew of 23 (nationals of Italia, Bangladesh, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Indonesia) was reportedly safe. Just two hours later another vessel, the 52,400 dwt "Great Legend" was attacked by five pirates in the same area.
