Container ship ran aground, crew evacuated
The 'MSC Baltic III', en route from Montreal to Corner Brook, ran aground in the Bay of Islands in the St. Lawrence Gulf on the early morning of Feb 15, 2025, in stormy weather. The ship had lost power and drifted aground broadside on the rocks near Lark Harbour, where it got stock in pos. 49° 05' N 058° 26' W, pounded by the towering surf. Efforts to stop the drift by deploying the starboard side anchor failed. The ship issued a mayday call at 4.35 a.m. The Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS 'Henry Larson' was in the area and search and rescue aircraft have joined in the effort. All 20 crew members were safely evacuated. five crew members were reported injured. The rescue crews also included a Cormorant helicopter crew from 103 Search and Rescue Squadron, Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander; the CC-130H Hercules aircraft and crew from 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron, 14 Wing Greenwood. Trending. Both Search and Rescue (SAR) and the Canadian Coast Guard responded to the call immediately, with SAR Hercules departing Greenwood, NS, and a helicopter from 103 squadron Gander. The SAR 103 Squadron Cormorant arrived on site at around 9:15 a.m., and the Hercules arrived at around 9:55 a.m. A winter storm warning was raging in the region, with winds up to 120km/h, and waves of 5-6 meters height.
