Internet cutter beached in Alang
The "MSC Alice" that switched the internet off for the whole of Somalia has been beached at Alang where it will be broken up for recycling.
MSC ALICE released?
Container ship MSC ALICE was detained by Somalian authorities for allegedly, damaging underwater fiber cable by dragging anchor, cutting Somalia off internet. It is not known when exactly it happened, but judging from AIS track, accident took place on arrival, or shortly after arrival, because connection is down for some three weeks, and vessel arrived at Mogadishu on June 29. Somali attorney general Ahmed Ali Dahir claims that the outage is causing losses of $10 million every day, and the government is seeking compensation. Probably, some arrangements were made and agreement achieved, because boxship left Mogadishu on July 13, destination unknown.
Boxship detained for cutting internet cable
Somalia has detained the "MSC Alice" which was alleged to have cut undersea fibre optic cables and plunging the country into a state of internet blackout. Somalia has for the past two weeks been without internet connection. The vessel had brought goods to a port in the capital Mogadishu when the accident occured. Somalia’s Attorney General confirmed that the vessel was being held in Somali waters and that the country was also demanding compensation from the losses that they have incurred since the incident. The outage costs the country $10m each day, he however did not state how much compensation Somalia will be pushing for.
