Grounding off Dutch coast
The "Monnik" with 60 passengers on board ran aground between Lauwersoog and Schiermonnikoog off the Dutch coast on Jan 12, 2012, at 4 p.m. Attempts by the KNRM-lifeboats "Koning Willem 1" from Schiermonnikoog and "Annie Jacoba Visser" from Lauwersoog to pull off the ship were abandoned around 5 p.m., and it was decided to wait for the rising tide instead. At 6.30 p.m., earlier than expected, the ship refloated. At 6.50 p.m. it moored at Schiermonnikoog. The grounding was thought to have been caused by the stormy winds which changed the water depths. Passengers which had to go back to Schiermonnikoog were carried aboard the smaller ferry "Esonborg" from Lauwersoog.
