Tug and barge refloated
After several hours, a salvage copmpany jointly with crews from the the Coast Guard’s Atlantic City and Delaware Bay stations were able to refloat a barge and the "Miss Katie" on Feb 21. Both had run aground near Absecon Inlet after power loss of the tug the previous day north of the Inlet. The 135-foot barge drifted and ran aground on the south side of the north jetty. Initially, crews from the Coast Guard’s Atlantic City station arrived on Feb 20 with the intention of assisting the convoy, but due to weather conditions, crews had to suspend operations until the next day. The Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay’s Incident Management Division oversaw the salvage and pollution prevention operations of the tug and barge on Brigantine Beach, anmd both the tug and barge were successfully removed from the beach and jetty respectively. The local police and contractors played a significant role in the overall success of the operation. The barge was carrying construction equipment, including a large crane. Tugboat runs aground on Brigantine beach
An 86-foot tugboat reportedly lost power before running aground on the south end of the beach early on Feb 20, 2016. An investigation is currently underway to determine just what happened to the Miss Katie, which was towing a barge to Great Egg Harbor Inlet, Petty Officer David Micaleff said. The MISS KATIE remains attached to the barge, which the Coast Guard said is stuck on the north jetty at Absecon Inlet. The MISS KATIE is owned by Marquette Transportation Co., billed on the company’s website as one of the nation’s largest transportation services.Company officials couldn’t be reached for comment on Saturday. A person who answered the phone said company offices were closed on Saturday, and that a company representative was expected to be on site by Saturday night. The Miss Katie apparently ran aground sometime around 4:30 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.Units from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City went to the scene and reported no collision occurred and that there were no injuries, Micaleff said.
