TSC investigating explosion
Transport Canada was investigating the explosion aboard the "Minoan Glory" which blew open a hatch and released a large white plume of smoke near the Lions Gate Bridge. Following the explosion the hold's contents vented in a process called fumigation. There was no fire, nor were there any injuries. Transport Canada won't allow to depart until the federal agency has reviewed its seaworthiness and structural integrity. The agency has dispatched a marine safety inspector to assess whether the ship was complying with cargo fumigation and tackle regulations. A qualified marine surveyor will also inspect the extent of the damage and what repairs are needed. 22 crew members and a pilot were on board at the time of the incident. The RCMP and the Vancouver Port Authority were also investigating the case. The ship remained stationary in pos. 49° 18.00' N 123° 14.57' W as of Aug 8.
Malfunction of fumigation hatch caused lot of smoke
Emergency crews responded to an explosion aboard a the "Minoan Glory" in the Burrard Inlet west of the Lions Gate Bridge in front of West Vancouver’s Ambleside area in the afternoon of Aug 6, 2019, just before 5 p.m. A loud bang was heard from the freighter, before white smoke started then seen billowing from the vessel which had just cleared Stanley Park. The Canadian Coast Guard scrambled vessels from its Kitsilano base to the scene, and it was determined the explosion and smoke was caused by a malfunction with the ship’s fumigation hatch. The incident blowed out a hatch to vent the pressure. There were no injuries and no spills as a result of the incident. The "Minoan Glory", which had arrived in Vancouver on Aug 2, and was bound to Singapore with an ETA as of Sep 1, was moored in pos. N 49° 18.03' N 123° 14.51 W on Vancouver Anchorage.
