Explosion may be cause for blaze

Three crew members of the "Ming Yang" were saved by the Japanese Coastguard with minor injuries on Oct 21. The Japanese Coastguard was alerted by the Taiwan authorities on Oct 19 evening about the fire on the "Ming Yang" of and sent patrol boats and aircraft to the position about 150 km southeast of Okinawa. At around 02:30 a.m. LT on Oct 20, a Japanese Coast Guard vessel had rescued 21 people who escaped in a lifeboat, while 43 others remained on the deck of the vessel. All sailors were rescued towards at 3.47 a.m. The chief engineer had heard noises similar to those of an explosion coming from the main engine before the fire started. Chinese authorities sent a ship to bring back all 64 Chinese crew members. They were transferred to the "East China Rescue 111" on Oct 22 at 9:46 a.m. after it arrived at 7 a.m. The "East China Sea Rescue 111" also will try to salvage the "Ming Yang" which was located at 450 nautical miles southeast of Dachen Island of east China's Zhejiang Province. Chinese rescue ship to reach burning Chinese reefer Ming Yang

SHANGHAI, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The rescue ship East China Rescue 111 is expected to reach a cargo ship that caught fire on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 in waters near Okinawa, local authorities said Sunday. The Ming Yang, a refrigerated fishing ship, caught fire late Saturday night and the incident was reported to the East China Rescue Bureau under the Ministry of Transport at 2:35 a.m. Sunday, said officials with the bureau. Sixty-four Chinese sailors onboard have been saved by Japanese rescue ships. China's rescue ship is expected to reach the site, about 450 nautical miles southeast of Dachen Island of Zhejiang Province, at 9 a.m. Monday to salvage the Mingyang, officials said. The Mingyang, 144 meters long and 13.6 meters wide, has a transport capacity of 12,703 tonnes.

On fire in the Pacific, 64 crew rescued by Japanese Coast Guard

Chinese reefer Ming Yang required immediate assistance, reporting fire on board, on the night of Oct 20 2012. Japanese Coast Guard dispatched patrol boats which managed to rescued all 64 crew, rescue operation was successfully completed by 03:45 Tokyo time Oct 21. 23 people were picked up from life rafts, other 41 were rescued from board of the reefer, reportedly they found refuge on a bow port of the vessel, f’castle maybe, the rest of vessel being on fire or covered with thick smoke. Crew of 64 seems to be too high even for a big reefer, but Chinese vessels generally have bigger crews than most vessels of the same type and tonnage belonging to other nations.
