Tug doused flames on blazing fishing vessel

Fri Apr 20 09:18:40 CEST 2018 Timsen

On Apr 18, 2018, the "Michelle Sloan" assisted the 47.ft-f/v "Midori" which had caught fire at 9 a.m. 10 miles west of Trinidad, Florida. A crewmember from the distressed fishing vessel contacted another fishing vessel, the "Charlie D", via cell phone to report the fire. The crew of the "Charlie D" in turn contacted the Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay via VHF channel 16, reporting the "Midori" was on fire with five crewmembers preparing to abandon ship. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a 47-foot lifeboat crew to assist. The "Midori" crew donned their survival suits and abandoned ship into a life raft. The fishing vessel "Pacific Bully" rescued all five crew members before the helicopter and boat arrived at the location to find the vessel’s pilothouse engulfed in flames. Shortly after, the nearby "Michelle Sloan" diverted from its course and extinguished the fire aboard the Midori. The Coast Guard was coordinating fuel removal and salvage operations on Apr 19. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Humboldt Bay pollution responders have determined the "Midori" was safe to be towed to the Eureka Municipal docks, where the 1,500 gallons of diesel were to be removed. Before the vessel was towed to port, a helicopter crew from Sector Humboldt Bay conducted an additional overflight in the evening of Apr 18 to assess any potential pollution and saw no signs of a spill in the area where the vessel caught fire. Harley Marine Services, Seattle, WA, is adding two new ship handling vessels to its fleet. Built by shipbuilder Diversified Marine, Portland, OR, they are an improved version of Harley's existing RAmparts 2500 Z-drive tugs, the Tim Quigg and John Quigg, designed by Robert Allan. The first of the two, the MICHELLE SLOAN, was set for delivery from the shipyards today and her sister class vessel, the LELA FRANCO , will follow just three months afterwards. The vessels will each have a length of 80', a beam of 36' and a depth of 16'-8" The 5,200 horsepower tugs are able to deliver 65 tons of bollard pull.
