Beam trawler suffered water ingress after stern tube split

Sat Jan 19 23:25:35 CET 2013 Timsen

Salcombe RNLI’s volunteer crew were called out at 7.48 p.m. on Jan 18, 2013, to assist the "Danielle" which was taking on water 30 miles south of Salcombe harbour. The "Baltic Exchange III" was launched to assist the fishing vessel whose stern tube had split. Coastguard Rescue helicopter 106 from Portland was also tasked. The helicopterarrived on scene first and placed a winch man and a salvage pump on board before having to return to Portland to refuel. With the helicopter pump maintaining the level of water ingress, a discussion between the skipper of the "Danielle" and the Salcombe lifeboat Coxswain, a decision was made to head towards the fishing boat's home port of Brixham, with the Salcombe lifeboat escorting and with it’s salvage pump at the ready if required. The Salcombe lifeboat escorted the "Danielle" to a position South of Berry Head where the Torbay lifeboat took over the escort to Brixham harbour, allowing the Salcombe all-weather lifeboat to return to station, where she arrived back at it’s mooring at 1.50 a.m. on Jan 19 morning.
