An extensive replacement of a hub in the gearbox sent the ferry to the quay in Søby at the end of March, but it will now be put on the route again on Friday morning 11 April – a day earlier than planned. Repairs were carried out by the technicians from MAN and Søby Værft as well as the staff on the ferry and in the municipal ferry company. This means that the ferry 'Ærøskøbing' sails from Ærøskøbing at 05:30 a.m., while the'Marstal' sails at 6:30 a.m.
Ferry suffered gearbox breakdown
The 'Marstal' has suffered a gear breakdown and was sent to the shipyard in Søby on March 27, 2025, leaving the route Ærøskøbing-Svendborg in limbo, as the other ferry on the route, the 'Skjoldnæs', was out of service due to regular maintenance too at that time. The sailings of the 'Marstal' have since been cancelled until April 11. The 'Skjoldnæs', after its regular stay at the same shipyard, will now be ready to sail on Arpil 4, three days earlier than planned.
Ferry suffered faulty valve
Four double trips of the 'Marstal' between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg had to be cancelled on Jan 6, 2020, due to technical problems. Affected were the sailings departing from Ærøskøbing at 5.35 a.m., 8.35 a.m., 11.35 a.m. and 2.35 p.m. A fuel control valve needed to either be adjusted or repaired which meant that there was a risk of light and electricity going off, so the ship could not sail until completion of repairs. A technician was called to fix the error. The ferry was saiing again at 5.35 p.m. The affected passengers were transported aboard the 'Ærøxpressen' in the meantime.
