Man who fell over board rescued with slight hypothermia

Wed May 16 12:23:15 CEST 2018 Timsen

On May 15, 2018, at 12:13 a.m, the Port Authority of Messina received a request for assistance from the ""Messina" after a man had fallen into the sea from the ferry about 500 meters from the port entrance. From the ferry, a smoke bomb was thrown into the sea to allow rescuers not to lose sight of the person. An MOB was dropped from the ship and was joined by the SAR boats "CP 852" and "G.C.A 82" that were launched a few minutes afte rthe alert. The SAR patrol boat a few minutes later located the man near the smoke bomb. He immediately recovered and transported to the port where he was awaited by medical staff. He had only suffered a slight hypothermia and was transported to the Piedmont hospital for appropriate care. It was a 19-year-old boy belonging to a school that was on a trip to eastern Sicily.
