Ship suffered propulsion loss

Mon Sep 16 11:53:52 CEST 2024 Timsen

A swift response by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has prevented a potential environmental disaster in the shallow waters of the Apo Reef Natural Park off the coast of Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, on Sep 11, 2024, after the 'Meridian Queen' had lost propulsion due to a mechanical issues with its controllable pitch propeller control with 23 people on board. It was drifting towards the protected area. The PCG’s multi-role response vessel, BRP 'Cabra (MRRV 4409)' was dispatched to assist the ship, and, in coordination with the Apo Reef Protected Area Superintendent and park rangers, ensured that the vessel was temporarily towed to a safer location, away from the shallow waters and coral reefs. The PCG had remained on-site, with the 'Cabra' on standby, until a tug arrived to safely tow the 'Meridian Queen' to a repair facility.
