Ship storing ammonium nitrate due back tomorrow at Port of Newcastle

Thu May 10 08:52:55 CEST 2012 arnekiel

MCP Kopenhagen, the ship hired by Orica to store 3000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate is due to arrive back in the Port of Newcastle at 6pm tomorrow, May 11, 2012. Orica general manager Australia Asia James Bonnor said the company had decided to formally notify the public about the return to port of the MCP Kopenhagen. The ship loaded its cargo late last month at the Mayfield 4 berth and will return there tomorrow to unload it. Mr Bonnor said the time of the ship’s berthing would be determined by Newcastle Port Corporation. The corporation’s shipping notifications show the MCP Kopenhagen is due at Mayfield 4 wharf at 6pm tomorrow. http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/ship-storing-ammonium-nitrate-for-orica-due-back-tomorrow/2551659.aspx

Chemical cargo cleared for sailing

Mon Apr 30 12:11:06 CEST 2012 Timsen

The cargo of potentially explosive chemicals aboard the "MCP Kopenhagen" was given the all-clear by a federal agency. Chemicals manufacturer Orica loaded about 3000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate onto the cargo ship MCP Kopenhagen for storage while the company carries out maintenance at its Kooragang Island plant. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was responsible for approving the offshore storage of the chemicals. The vessel set sail on Apr 28, 2012, in the morning after all the safety boxes were ticked by AMSA. Eight operational deficiencies identified on the ship were fixed before the vessel sailed from port. None of the deficiencies related to the carriage of dangerous cargo, and none was serious enough for AMSA to detain the vessel. The dangerous goods inspection was completed, at which all requirements for safely carrying ammonium nitrate were satisfied.

Chemical company Orica uses ship to store dangerous chemicals off Newcastle

Sun Apr 29 07:26:17 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Chemical company Orica said on April 28, 2012 its use of a ship to store potentially dangerous chemicals off Newcastle, north of Sydney, is not an unusual operation. The State Opposition says the government has failed the people of Newcastle by not informing them that the ship was being used to store ammonium nitrate near the city. The Maritime Union of Australia says the ship, M-C-P Kopenhagen, is "dangerously sub-standard". Orica spokeswoman Nicole Ekert says the company is using the ship to maintain supply of the chemical to clients in the region while a plant is upgraded. She says the operation doesn't pose a risk to the community. http://au.news.yahoo.com/local/nsw/a/-/local/13549180/orica-uses-ship-to-store-chemicals-off-newcastle/
