Boathand destroyed ship in hammer attack

Sat Feb 14 16:14:33 CET 2015 Timsen

In the evening of Feb 12, 2015 a dispute broke out between the German master and a Czechian deckhand of the "Melanie". When the ship, which was coming from Bremen, was sailing in the lock channel of the Weser lock in Langwedel the boatman when getting notice of the termination of his work on the ship , grabbed a hammer and destroyed everything he came across. The police was called at 5:30 p.m., upon receiving notification of a hammer attack and emphasizing the possibility of danger to life or health. On site it was found that the boatman did not use the hammer directly to attack the captain, who suffered only superficial cuts on his hands but smashed all windows of the wheelhouse and the accomodation rooms, the instrument panel of the ship's electronic including radar and steering gear and even parts of the engine and the bow thruster were damaged. The ship got out of control and struck bottom, giving the boatman the chance to jump onto shore and flee. A search for the culprit remained so far without success and it was expected he was trying to get home. The damage was estimates around 90,000 Euro plus the losses of earnings.
