Tanker detained for illegal STS transfer

The Penang Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained the 'Mekar Jaya' for conducting ship to ship (STS) oil transfer without permission 0,16 nautical miles east of Persiaran Karpal Singh on April 6, 2023. Its director, Maritime Captain Abd Razak Mohamed said, Penang MMEA which was carrying out a patrol, detected the 'Mekar Jaya' and the tug 'YKP Karishma' in a suspicious manner at 2.10 p.m. Upon inspection, the 'Mekar Jaya' was found operated by eight crew members aged between 26 and 46 yeards with proper travel documents. A check on the other ship found six crew members, comprising of four Indonesians and two Thai nationals aged between 35 and 51, with legal travel documents. The 'Mekar Jaya' was detained for committing a violation under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for failing to inform the Marine Department director before conducting STS oil transfer. The MMEA held the captains of the vessel and tugboat for further investigations.
