Steamship threatened after bridge collapse in Dresden
On the morning of Sep 11, 2024, the 'Meißen' was threatened to break lose from its moorings on the Elbe in Dresden after the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge at 3 a.m. The ship was moored at the jetty just behind the bridge. A strong current has formed on the edges of the collapsed concrete section.. Steamship emprloyes were working to secure the 'Meißen' at its berth. A 100 meter long section of the bridge over which the trams travel collapsed and was blocking the river's shipping channel. Other parts of the bridge were in acute danger of collapsing. A second bridge was is also sagging. No one was injured by the accident, the cause of which was still unclear. The entire area around the Carola Bridge, including the Elbe federal waterway, the Elbe cycle path and the terrace bank, were completely closed until further notice. Road users had to expect considerable disruption. The collapse has eliminated an important transport link, the B170 over the Elbe. People were asked to avoid the area as much as possible and not to hinder the emergency services. A gap of around one meter had formed at the bridgehead on the Old Town side. In addition, there was a defect in two district heating pipes. Parts of the terrace bank were flooded. There was currently no district heating supply in the whole city of Dresden. The situation and the next steps were currently being assessed. A fire department drone was also being used at the bridge. The fire department was currently only carrying out damage limitation. The situation on site remained tense with an acute risk of death and collapse.
