Cargo caught fire
Scrap metal in the cargo hold of the 'Mehmet Unlu' with 16 crew members on board has caught fire in the evening of Oct 20, 2021, in the port of Ploče at berth 3. The vessel was loading the cargo of scrap metal since Oct 19. The cause of the fire was self ignition. Firefighters were called at 9 p.m. and attended with five engines. A partial offloading of the cargo with grabs was required to get access to the fire. The fire fighting operations continued into the night. Representatives of the police, the Port Authority and two tigs also attended at the scene of the accident. Crew member injured in brawl
A brawl broke out among the crew of the "Mehmet Unlu" in the night of Sep 4, 2016, some time after the vessel had left Nikolayev at 2.15 p.m. and was under way abeam of Yuzhniy port, being bound for Aqaba. Two drunk crew started a fight with four other crew members and wounded three of them. After that, they took five crew members as hostages, the rest of the mostly Turkish crew locked themselves in one of the cabins or compartments and caused an engine blackout. The master of the vessel was seriously injured, but managed to send a distress call, requesting immediate help. The vessel was stormed by the Ukrainian Special Forces team ALFA, which freed the hostages and released barricaded people. Two mutineers were arrested. The vessel, until freed, she was held under control and prevented from running aground by tugs. The "Mehmet Unlu" was currently located about five kilometers off the Odesa Oblast coastal town of Chornomorske.
