Container ship assisted in rescue of 15 migrants

On Oct 17, at 10.15 .a.m the SAR boat 'Salvamar Leo' rescued 15 people who were in a boat adrift about 34 miles east of the Alicante coast, all male adults of North African origin. The fishing boat 'L'Illeta d'Altea' had spotted a precarious fiber glass boatbetween the coasts of Benidorm and Alicante, and alerted the emergency services. Until the arrival of the 'Salvamar Leo', the 'Medkon NLS', which was nearby on its way from Oran to Sevilla, remained on standby to monitor the vessel. The SAR boat took the boat in tow and pulled it to the port of the Alicante, where the Red Cross provided assistance to the migrants.
