Indian Navy supported ship after attack

An Indian warship played an important role in providing aid to the 'Islander' after a suspect drone or missile attack in the Gulf of Aden, which led to the injury of one of the crew members. Responding to a distress call, the Indian warship reached the vicinity of the 'Islander' to ensure the safety and security of the seafarers. Upon arrival, an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Navy boarded the vessel to address any remaining hazards, after which the 'Islander' was cleared for onward travel. At the same time, a medical team provided important medical assistance to the injured crew member. Damaged ship moored off Djibouti

The 'Islander', en route from Pap Ta Phut to Aladabiyah, diverted its course by 90 degrees after the Houthi attack, which set the ship on fire, on Feb 22. The operator of the Islander is a company called Gemstone Marine Ltd., which is based in Liberia and only owns that ship. Its technical manager is a Romania-based business called African Express Ltd. The ship moored in Djibouti Anchorage on Feb 23 at 8.10 a.m. in pos. 11° 39.22' N 043° 10.55' E.

Bulk carrier hit by two missiles

On Feb 22, 2024, the 'Islander' was hit by two missiles in the Gulf of Aden, southeast of the city of Aden, in southern Yemen causing a fire on board. Coalition forces were responding to the fire. The ship appeared to be heading from Map Ta Phut, Thailand, towards the Red Sea. Other merchant vessels are advised to move away from the vessel. Yemen's Houthi rebels who say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians in the context of the war in Gaza.
