Disabled tanker slammed into fishing boats

Tue Nov 20 10:26:13 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Tradewind Legend", coming from Georgetown, went adrift on the Suriname River on Nov 19, 2018, at 1 p.m. and struck 11 fishing boats at the fishing center in Nieuw Amsterdam in Commewijne, which have been smashed. The tanker was only stopped by dropping anchor. It was suspected that the engine had failed before. The tanker was on its way to the oil refinery at Tout Lui Faut in Wanica to load a cargo of oil for export. The charterer Staatsolie regretted the accident and ensured that the fishers will be compensated. Also the quay of the fishing center in Nieuw Amsterdam and a dam were damaged. The authorities conducted an investigation, and the tanker was detained. It was moored at Paramaribo at 5 p.m. in pos. 05° 51.88' N 055° 5.58' W.
