Vessel detained in Nakhodka for poor wages and defiencies
The 'VSG Dream' was detained in the port of Nakhodka in Primorye on Feb 17, 2023, due to poor technical conditions, low wages for the 19 crew members and non-observance of their rights. The ship ad arrived at Nakhodka with a cargo of rice and will remain in the port until the violations are addressed. On board were 10 Vietnamese and nine Indian seafarers. There was no collective agreement with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). The salary of a 1st class sailor from Vietnam is $1,150, a 1st class sailor from India is $300, individual contracts of seamen from Vietnam are not properly drawn up. Thus, they did not specify the amount of wages and insurance compensation in the event of the death of a seafarer. In the employment contracts of seafarers from India, the amount of wages was indicated, but it was very low: $ 200 and $ 300 per month. The crew first learned about the existence of the seafarers' union and the ITF", They also did not know what "convenient" flags are and what shipowners use them for. In addition the crew had difficulties with communication: Vietnamese and Indian sailors communicate in different languages and do not understand each other well. After checking the technical condition of the vessel, the port control inspector of Nakhodka discovered a large number of violations and decided to detain the vessel in the port until all the defuiencies have been rememdied. The trade union, in turn, informed the port inspector about serious violations of the shipowner in matters of implementation of the Consolidated Convention of 2006 - low wages, violations in the preparation of individual contracts without specifying wages and sums insured. Union representatives also told the crew about the ITF.
