Gas escape and water ingress in Birkenhead

Thu Nov 28 19:18:18 CET 2013 Timsen

Firefighters were called to a suspected fire on the "Porth Diana" in Birkenhead in the evening of Nov 26, 2013. The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called to Cambeltown Road at 5.39 p.m. after reports of a fire. Five fire appliances were sent to the scene, including one from Birkenhead Community Fire Station and one from Upton Community Fire Station. The Marine Fire Rescue Unit’s boat "Marine Fire One" was also sent to the scene. On arrival, firefighters found no sign of a fire onboard the crew transfer vessel, which was tied up at a pontoon and was being used to transport works for the Gwynt y Môr wind farm which is currently under construction. A defective component was thought to have released some gas which may have been mistaken for smoke. All personnel on board were able to safely leave the vessel at the pontoon next to the Gwynt y Môr Base Harbour Port Facility by Cammell Laird Shipyard on the River Mersey in Birkenhead. There were no injuries. Firefighters provided a light portable pump from "Marine Fire One" to the crew to help them pump out some of the water from one of the compartments onboard. The water ingress had been caused by a broken pipe. Also the "Colywin Bay" responded to the distress situation.
