Fishing vessels destroyed in yard fire

In the early morning of Nov 9, 2019, the trawler 'Plaia de Esteiro', 217 gt (IMO. 8734774), burned out after a fire broke out at the Astilleros de Placeres in Pontevedra in Combarro (Poio) where the ship was drydocked. The blaze also destroyed the longliner 'Mar do Rostro' and damaged another trawler as well as the facilities of the yard itself. The fire alerted the residents of Lourizán (in Pontevedra) and also of Marín, since there were successive explosions,large columns of fire and smoke. It even forced to temporarily cut off the PO-11 road, known as the Marín highway, as the flames approached the road. In the first moments a contamination of the shellfish bank was feared, although anti-pollution measures were quickly applied around the affected industry. The fire quickly spread through the shipyard, where highly flammable products such as paints and varnishes, as well as fuel tanks, were affected. It forced the activation of level 1 of the Civil Protection Territorial Plan of Galicia. Firefighters from O Morrazo and O Salnés, the Civil Protection of Cambados and Poio, as well as the SAR-boat 'SAR Gavia' and 'Irmán García Nodal' of Salvamento Marítimo which supported the work of extinction from the sea, and the logistic support group of the Axencia de Emerxencias de Galicia, which provided a capacity of 25 tons of water to supply the means of extinction. A tug was ready to intervene if necessary. Firefighters of Vigo, O Morrazo, Baixo Miño, Ribadumia and O Salnés were also mobilized, as well as members of Civil Protection of Pontevedra, Poio and Cambados. The fire was brought under control at 3.30 a.m. and mostly put out after 12 hours around noon the next day. Cooling work in the area was continued. Anti pollution barriers were deployed to control possible fuel spills. The Pontevedra Scientific Police investigates the causes of the fire.
