Barge allided with bridge
On Sep 28, 2019, at 8.40 p.m. the 'Celina', 1324 ts (EU-No.: 04811190), allided with a railway bridge in Wittingen. The master suffered only scratches as he managed to get down onto the floor of the wheelhouse which he had forgotten to lower when the barge was transiting the Elbe-Side-Canal northwards enroute from Osnabrück to Brunsbüttel. Short time before the accident he had to stop at a construction site to let an approaching ship pass. To get a better overview over the narrow in the darkness, he had raised the wheelhouse but did not lower it when resuming the voyage. When the bridge got in sight, it was too late. The wheelhouse hit the bridge and was largely destroyed. The barge managed to berth in the industrial port Wittingen where it was detained for repairs. Also the bridge was barred for train traffic until investigations were completed. The damage was at least 30.000 Euro. A alcohol test of the experienced master was negative.
