Cargo ship ran into house
On July 21, 2015, at 12.54 a.m. the "Majed and Randy" while passing the Bosphorus in north south direction enroute from Istanbul to Beirut suffered a rudder faulure off Kanlica and smashed into the second floor of an 1860 built mansion from the Ottoman period situated on the water front, the facade of which was broken up. Also the bow of the cargo ship suffered significant damage. The Vessel Traffic Service alerted the tug "Kurtama 3" and the lifeboat "Kiyi Emniyeti 8" as well as a pilot boat. At 1.52 p.m. another tug was ordered escort the ship which was taken in tow and subsequently towed to an anchorage near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. At 3 p.m. the cargo vessel dropped anchor at Büyükdere. Freighter violates UN Crimea sanctions
In response to the annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia, the European Union has published Regulation 692/2014 of 23 June 2014, introducing trade sanctions in respect of goods originating in Crimea or Sevastopol and on the provision, directly or indirectly, of financing or financial assistance, as well as insurance and reinsurance, related to the import of such goods. General cargo vessel Majed and Randy was docked in Sevastopol port, at grain terminal Avlita, from July 15 till July 17. Vessel is sailing to Famagusta port, Northern Cyprus. According to official statements of Rosselkhoznadzor (Agriculture State Agency of Russia), Crimea is exporting its’ grain to Saudi Arabia and Northern Cyprus. EU sanctions emphasize on grain exports, hence direct violation, made by m/v Majed and Randy and her owners. All those who’d consider Majed and Randy for chartering should take into account all risks involved. Vessel may be arrested or detained in ports of Ukraine or EU, especially considering latest developments in Ukrainian crisis (Malaysia Airlines Flight tragedy). Vessel most probably, is operated by an Egyptian company, which either doesn’t know about sanctions, or found offer impossible to reject. One more guess is, Russian/Crimean grain traders can make deal or deals with shipowners, chartering their vessels purposefully for Crimean grain shipments, at exorbitant freight rates. Owner may exploit vessel exclusively on Crimea grain shipments, and after that, sold it or put in a lay-up. Crimea, according to Russian authorities, may export up to 500,000 tons of grain this season. So maybe, it’s worth it.
