Two accidents at Iskenderun in stormy weather

Fri Mar 11 18:51:28 CET 2022 Timsen

One cargo ship was pushed aground, two other were in collision in Iskenderun Bay on March 11, 2022, in stormy weather. The 'Moraz' (IMO: 9104809), en route from Asdod to Iskenderun, broke lose from the port pier in the Hatay Iskenderun district and was pushed aground by strong winds after the anchor dragged. The Iskenderun Port Authority deployed two tugs to find out if a swift refloating operation was possible, but they couldn’t establish a towing connection due to the strong winds and shallow water. The hull of the freighter was punctured, and a breached tank started leaking fuel. The ship was rocking violently in the surf on the rocks of the embankment. The 'Maher' (IMO: 8806905) dragged anchor and allided with the moored 'Burak Deval' (IMO:9349978), which had arrived from Doertyöl on March 1, at the anchorage. She was towed to the safe zone in the escort of a tug, leaving its anchor. An administrative investigation was launched by the Iskenderun Port Authority.
