Passenger ship in distress off Car Nicobar
The Indian Coast Guard came to the rescue of 250 passengers, including 102 bound for Chennai, after the "Swaraj Dweep" suffered water ingress on Aug 2, 2018, at 1.30 a.m. The captain requesting urgent assistance to stop the flooding in the cargo hold 2. The ship was around 40 nautical miles from the Keating Point Lighthouse in Car Nicobar, bound for Nancowry and then to Campbell Bay before proceeding to Chennai. It was adrift in the northernmost part of Andaman and Nicobar Island. The ship had on board 102 passengers bound for Chennai and 148 local passengers. The Coast Guard vessel "Aruna Asaf Ali" was immediately sent and started to dewater the ship with strong submersible pumps. The flooding was contained at five metres level and since receded to one feet height. The "Ocean Marvel" has been sent to take the passengers off. Passenger ship left port three days late after cyclone passed
The "Swaraj Dweep", stranded in the city due to cyclone Roanu, headed from Visakhapatnam to Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 21, 2016, at 11.10 a.m. The ship was originally scheduled to leave the city on May 18. Owing to the inclement weather, the sailing was cancelled, and arrangements were made to provide food to the stranded passengers.
