Sri Lanka High Court heard the case of the 'Avant Garde' in Colombo
The Sri Lanka High Court heard the case of the 'Avant Garde' in Colombo, on Jan 17, 2020. The High Court granted bail to the Chairman of the Avant Garde Maritime Services Company, who was charged with illegally operating a floating armory on board the vessel and ordered the acquittal of five defendants in the case. The court fixed the next hearing date on Feb 10. The suspects have been charged for violating the Firearms Ordinance, Explosives Ordinance, and the Penal Code in connection with the possession of 816 automatic firearms and ammunition 200935 on board the vessel without proper license or permit between Apr 7, 2014, and Oct 6, 2015. Further, the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar ordered to the prosecution that only 19 charges among 7573 charges could be maintained against the other eight accused, which included the vessel's captain.
Avant Garde case heard at High Court
The three-judge High Court of Sri Lanka was likely to hear case against the 'Avant Garde' on Oct 17, 2019. The Attorney General in July ordered the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest Avant Garde Maritime Services Chairman and others accused in connection with the operation of a floating armory in the Galle Port and produce before the court. The Ukrainian captain was also under arrest. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has also arrested Chairman of Avant Garde Maritime Services, in connection with the 'Avant Garde' case.
Trade unionists from maritime unions affiliated with ITF expressed support with captain
On Sep 20, 2019, hundreds of trade unionists from maritime unions affiliated with the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) have expressed their support and solidarity with the captain of the "Avant Garde". The Ukrainian man has been prevented from leaving Sri Lanka since his arrest on June 23, in connection with an ongoing police investigation relating to the vessel.
