Groundng at Borebukta
The 'Isbjørn II' ran aground in Borebukta north of Isfjorden in Svalbard on July 15, 2022, at 12.50 p.m. with 14 people on board. 11 of these have been evacuated on board another vessel and were transported to Longyearbyen. The Governor's ship "Polarsyssel" arrived at Borebukta at 3 p.m. and pulled the ship off. Several smaller vessels, among them the "Hanna Resvoll" and a boat from the travel company Basecamp Explorer were also asked to assist in the rescue operation. The vessel was heading with its own machine towards Longyearbyen. A possible diesel pollution in the water has been reported by a helicopter. The spill could have occurred when the ship heeled to port side in connection with the grounding. An ROV has been used in the work of mapping the extent of the damage. Crews from the Norwegian Coastal Administration's oil spill response depot were currently on hold in Longyearbyen.
