Debris of Luno removed
Technical services of the town of Anglet recovered two pieces of wreckage of the "Luno" at low tide. In early summer, the beach had been reopened to swimmers, despite the possible presence of buried pieces. In late August, parts of the ship came to the surface but could not yet be recovered. On Sep 8, it could be taken advantage of a particularly low tide and a calm sea to extract a pipe of seven meters length and a square plate of 1 m to 1,50 m. Both pieces were well in line with the Cavaliers beach, where one of the items had been reported. The technicians had loaned a metal detector of the Civil Protection to recover the remains buried under 2,50 m of sand. Around 11 a.m. the removal was completed. Another peace of the accomodation block remains locked in the rocks of the dike and will soon be finally fixed by raising the tip of the dike with artificial blocks. Wreckage of Luno resurfaced
A piece of metal belonging to the "Luno" resurfaced on the Cavaliers beach. Swimming was prohibited and a security zone was established, being advised by the mayor of Anglet on Aug 28 at 1 p.m. The big piece of metal was spotted south of the Cavaliers beach, a few hundred meters from the seafront. The metal quickly disappeared again with the incoming tide. On Aug 30 at low tide the wreckage was to be removed by the municipality.
Last section of Luno recovered
The last piece of wreckage of the "Luno", which was still immersed at the south of the dam at Cavaliers beach, was recovered in the evening of June 15 at 9.40 p.m. The 80 tons-section was difficult to remove because it was buried deep in the sand, and the chains used to pull it out had broken several times, so the chain puller had to be enstrengthened. The submerged wreckage was identified by sonar by Svitzer. Before, approximately 120 meters anchor chain had been recovered. The rest of the chain and the anchor, buried under the sand and rocks of the dike, may not be removed. While the goal to end work by May 31 was not achieved, the mayor planned to open the beach for the public on July 1, although the final schedule will be validated with the prefect.
