LuLu Belle salvaged
The Coast Guard is monitoring the pollution response and salvage effort of the "Lu Lu Belle" which on May 16, 2011, was being towed by two commercial fishing vessels from Port Etches scheduled to arrive at the port of Valdez in the afternoon where it will be removed from the water to carry out repairs. Seven hundred gallons of diesel fuel were safely litered from the vessel prior to commencing towing operations. MSU Valdez personnel and a salvage contractor surveyed the "Lu Lu Belle" following its grounding near Hinchinbrook Entrance. R&R Diving was contracted to carry out salvage of the vessel. LuLu Belle monitored
Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Valdez personnel surveyed the grounded "Lu Lu Belle"m and a contractor was sent from Port Etches to salvage the vessel near Hinchinbrook Entrance in Prince William Sound 50 miles south of Valdez. The vessel's two fuel tanks remained intact and no visible sheen has been reported. There is reportedly 400 gallons of diesel on board. R&R Diving has been contracted to carry out any pollution response and salvage of the vessel. LuLu Belle grounding
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew forward deployed to Cordova rescued the crew of 2 of the "Lu Lu Belle" which ran aground at Hinchinbrook Entrance in Prince William Sound 50 miles south of Valdez at 3:52 a.m. on May 14, 2011. Sector Anchorage command center personnel received a VHF-FM radio call from the "Lu Lu Belle" reporting the ship had grounded with two crewmen aboard. The Jayhawk crew departed Cordova at 4:21 a.m. and was able to safely land on the beach and rescue the two men at 5:40 a.m. The passengers were transported by the helicopter crew to Era Aviation at the Valdez airport by 6:15 a.m.
